Firmware

The software in the NorthQ that makes it work is called firmware, or BIOS (Basic Input/Output System).

There is two different firmwares in the NorthQ:

bullet The "main" software, which controls how the menus look, interprets remote control codes, controls the hard-disk, DVD and all other hardware in the NorthQ.
bullet The DVD-loader firmware, which is in control of reading actual data from the disc in the DVD.

Both of these firmwares can be upgraded if needed, but new firmware for the DVD-loader is rarely released. But the "main" software for the NorthQ is released more often, and it is this software that adds more functionality to the NorthQ.

Both of the firmwares in the NorthQ 7xxx player can be upgraded by burning a CD with the new firmware on. This CD is then inserted in the NorthQ DVD, which will then update the appropriate firmware itself.

Be very careful when you upgrade the firmware in your player. If it goes wrong, your player will probably be unusable!!!
