For more information about what an XVCD is, read this article from DVDRhelp.
I have tried XVCD compatibility with one XVCD's downloaded from VCDHelp on the 10:th of July 2002:
"XVCD NTSC Sample, 352x240
2500kbit/s MPEG1 Constant Bitrate" |
I have tested this XVCD on the NorthQ 7100 and there video played fine, but the audio skipped a couple of times. |
I have also made an XVCD myself with four short movies in different bitrates, to see how high the NorthQ can go when playing XVCD's.
All four clips has 352x288 resolution. The bitrates are:
|
As far as I could tell, the NorthQ played the first three movies without any problems! But when I tried the 4Mbit/s movie, the sound started to skip occasionally.
The XVCD I made myself had the same problem with PBC that the VCD's had. It seems that the NorthQ always disables PBC before staring to play an XVCD disc. You have to manually enable it by pressing the "PBC" button on the remote control to get the menus working.
Another bad thing on the NorthQ when it comes to playing XVCD's is that it has no "Return" (or "Back") key defined! Once I started playing one of the clips on my self-made XVCD, there were no way to get back to the menu! If there had been a "Return" key on the remote control, this would not have been a problem.
On the VCD compatibility test page, there were some XVCD clips tested:
352x240/288, 1500 CBR | |
352x240/288, 1150 VBR | |
480x480/576, 2000 VBR | |
704x480/576, 3000 VBR | |
704x480/576, 6000 CBR |
All these failed to play correctly, they all had problems with skipping audio and skipping/slow video.
So it seems to be very hard to say where the limit is for XVCD's. You will just have to test yourself if you want to make your own XVCD's.
