For more information about what a DVD-Audio disc is, read this article from Digital Audio Guide.
A friend of mine bought Queen's "A Night at the Opera" on DVD-Audio disc, and I borrowed it to test if it worked in the NorthQ 7100.
This DVD is actually both a DVD-Video and a DVD-Audio disc, so it can be played in any DVD-player. But it is not certain that the DVD-player can play the DVD-Audio part of the DVD. In that case it will play the DTS 5.1 or the PCM Stereo track that is on the DVD-Video part of the disc.
The disc has the following format:
DVD-Audio | 96 kHz/24 bit 6-channel |
DVD-Video | Audio: DTS 5.1 or PCM Stereo Video: NTSC |
When I inserted the disc into the NorthQ and
navigated to the sound setup menu on the DVD, there were three choices for
the sound setup. I could only choose between the two first, 5.1 Digital Surround (DTS), and Stereo (PCM).

Here is the other choice I could make, Stereo (PCM).
On a DVD-player that has support for DVD-Audio,
the third choice, 5.1 Surround (MLP) is also available. This screenshot is taken from my Pioneer DV-656A, which has support for DVD-Audio. |
As it turned out, the NorthQ only played the DVD-Video part of the DVD. As the NorthQ has no DTS-decoder, it could only play the stereo part of the DVD-Video. I did not find any way to access the DVD-Audio part.
